Jon Kimura Parker - Photographs, Page 1

The following pages contain photographs taken in recent years while on tour. I hope that they convey a little more than the usual publicity shots do, even though the lighting, equipment, and reproduction may not be quite as sophisticated as in other photographs. More photos will be added when I find whichever box they are currently stored in. Happy viewing!

In Sarajevo

Jon Kimura Parker. Jackie in Sarajevo

This was taken on New Year's Eve 1995 in front of the National Theater in Sarajevo. There was evidence of the war everywhere here, but the Theater itself was only slightly damaged. During the rehearsals there was no heat or running water available in the hall, but because of intense media interest in the concert (it was televised live across Europe and covered by CNN), electricity was made available at the last minute. The following day, with Charles Ansbacher and the Sarajevo Philharmonic, we gave another concert in the same theater which was sponsored by AmeriCares.

Recording the Barber Concerto

Jon Kimura Parker. Recording Barber's Piano Concerto

This is the orchestra library of the Atlanta Symphony, which Telarc converts into a hi-tech engineering booth when making recordings. We are listening to a playback of the first movement of the Samuel Barber Piano Concerto, which we were recording in Atlanta in July 1996, just prior to the Centennial Olympics. In the center is Yoel Levi, Music Director of the Atlanta Symphony, and on the right is Robert Woods, Producer and CEO of Telarc International.

On Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic

In October 1996, I traveled for the first time to the Canadian Arctic, as part of Canada's Piano Six project to bring music to remote communities across the country. I was based in Iqualuit, NWT on Baffin Island. Because of the lack of a suitable performance piano, I brought a Roland electronic keyboard and a Fender amp, and this facilitated visits to every school in the Iqaluit area. This photograph was taken after a performance at the Apex school, in a community near Iqaluit. These students are primarily Inuit, the native people of this land. The road from Iqaluit to Apex is the only paved road between two communities on all of Baffin Island.

This photo was taken at the Nakasuk school in Iqaluit. I think our expressions speak for themselves! There is nothing more wonderful than seeing the eyes of a child light up with enthusiasm for something new.

A CD-signing in Vancouver

Jon Kimura Parker signing CDs

In February 1997 I was in my hometown of Vancouver, B.C. to perform Beethoven Piano Concerto #3 with Sergiu Comissiona and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. During the weekend I autographed several hundred copies of my most recent Telarc CD, of the Samuel Barber Piano Concerto. The CD-signing was organized by Liz Parker, Communications Director of the Vancouver Symphony. She is seen here in a stunning red dress, and yes, she IS my sister...

Among the wildlife of Tasmania

In August 1996 I gave my fifth tour of Australia, which included performances in Sydney, Perth, Brisbane, and Hobart, Tasmania. While in "Tassie" I had a chance to visit with some of the more gentle members of my Australian audience...
