
Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival 2000
The previous Season of the Orcas Island Chamber Music Festivalwas a great success! It featured a children's concert, and performances were presented twice to satisfy the demand for tickets. In addition to the Orcas Center, the Eastsound Episcopal Church was chosen again as a second performance venue. The participating artists were Artistic Director Aloysia Friedmann, Martin Friedmann, and Jeanne Preucil Rose (violin/viola), William Preucil, Gwen Starker Preucil and Stephen Rose (violin), Desmond Hoebig and Toby Saks (cello), Owen Kotler (clarinet), Jon Kimura Parker and Jamie Parker (piano).

Parker Records Barber!
In February 97, Telarc International released a new recording featuring Jon Kimura Parker in a performance of the Samuel Barber Piano Concerto with Yoel Levi and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. The Telarc CD also features the Barber Violin Concerto performed by Robert McDuffie, and the orchestral version of Barber's "Souvenirs". On New Year's Eve, 1995, Jon Kimura Parker gave a special performance in war-torn Sarajevo. Accompanying an AmeriCares airlift of over a million dollars of medical supplies bound for Kosovo Children's Hospital, Parker performed Beethoven's "Emperor" Piano Concerto with Charles Ansbacher and the Sarajevo Philharmonic. The concert, sponsored by AmeriCares, was broadcast live in 59 countries and was also covered by CNN. AmeriCares sponsors airlifts of medical and relief aid around the world and in North America. Jon Kimura Parker was chosen as the recipient of the 1996 National Arts Centre Governor General's Performing Arts Award. These awards, for Canadians in the performing arts, are presented annually in Ottawa by His Excellency Governor General Romeo LeBlanc. The 1996 Governor General's Performing Arts Awards were also awarded to singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell, dance educator and choreographer Grant Strate, film director Michel Brault, costume and set designer Francois Barbeau, lyricist and producer Luc Plamondon, and actor and director Martha Henry. The '95 recipient of the National Arts Centre Award was Metropolitan Opera star Ben Heppner who, like Mr. Parker, hails from British Columbia.Piano Six
Piano Six is a project conceived by Canadian pianist Janina Fialkowska. The six Canadian pianists of Piano Six (Fialkowska, Parker, Angela Hewitt, Angela Cheng, Marc-Andre Hamelin, and Andre LaPlante) each give recitals, master classes and school presentations in remote communities across Canada for a ten-day period each year. The entire project is coordinated by Colwell Arts Management. Jon Kimura Parker's Piano Six Tour 96-97 season included concerts in Fort St. John and Fort Nelson, B.C.; and Yellowknife and Iqaluit in the Northwest Territories, to mention "where no one has gone before!"....
